match grade barrel, or change calibers?

The last gun show i nearly bought a new barrel for my 27, it was going for $140.00 and had the extended muzzle brake. These things really work well or just look cool?
Also can I buy a .357 SIG barrel for my 27(.40 cal), drop it in and blast away?
I hate to mess with the lil feller it is a great shooter but 30% less muzzle jump would be desirable.
