cajun,
I too work retail, have had the pleasure of getting to know a couple of "elderly" vets, one Korean, the other WWII. Just talking to them really made me realize how these gentlemen feel when given a handshake and a thank you! The WWII vet had gotten shrapnel in his back from a German '88, sent back to Texas to get out, had records lost, sent back over, shot in the leg at Anzio and taken POW. This gent said he'd do it again too, "to get the bastards that shot me the first time". Being a vet from the 'Nam era, I too know what it means to get a thank you and a handshake, however few and far between they are.
