| Need someone to build me a "Tweede". I want to find a good gunsmith to build me a "Tweede" who is relatively close to me. I have recently bought a CG 1903 M96 military version. But I want a good setup to hunt and target shoot with that can stand the higher pressures of modern and handload cartridges. The Turkish mauser action with a 6.5x55mm barrel fitted so that the torque shoulder on the barrel and the bottom surface on the action meet at the same time when assembled. I live in the middle of NC in Lee County. Anyone have a recommendation? |

| i thought that was how all barrels are put in mauser actions, at least that is the way i have always done it, you might ask sam or mooseman if there is another way. steve

Thanks for all your comments. I know I can purchase another caliber, but I kind of taken a liking to the 6.5x55mm Swede.

| plank road maby you misundestood me, I have built a lot of custom rifles on all kinds of mauser actions and i have always fitted them where the shoulder of the barrel is a perfect match to the trued front shoulder of the action, and the front part of the barrel that comes in contact with the inside shoulder is also a perfect match, this is how i was taught to do it, and the 6.5x55 is a excellent round, also the new one on the block is the 6.5x284 which seems to have pretty good following also. The thing to do, is do a lot of looking and takling to other before making up your mind, because there are lot of really good calibers to choose from. I hope i have helped a little.steve

| if your new at this, take my advice, ive built guns and had them built for me- buy a new factory rifle for less money than your going to spend on having a mauser built. if in the end you decide you really want to have a mauser built, get a k98 action, and have a quality barrel put on it. dont put surplus junk on top of surplus junk. the rifle below i built 100% on my own- did not pay for any labor, yet there is more money in it than a top end remington varmint rifle would have cost. |

| Last two replies...... I hope I am not intruding on this forum by asking dumb questions. I don't mean to insult or bore you. I feel like the replies have been informative, but it reads like condescending answers to my posts. I am not a gunsmith neither do I own a gunsmith book. Is this a forum for "experts only"? I am a new owner of a M96 Swede that I bought at a pawn shop a couple of months ago just because I liked the looks of it. Finding out about this caliber and the options available about building one is interesting. I've just found out what a "Tweede" was and thought I'd explore the possibility of having one made. I do appreicate everyone's opinion and comments about their past experiences. |

Yes, I have inquired on other boards. I don't think all the expertise is on only one board. And yes, I have contacted Low-Tech. I have contacted others that have been recommended as well. Didn't mean to get everyone's air in a dither by my comments. No apologies necessary. Just didn't want to waste anyone's time. I do enjoy this forum and look forward to learn by reading and asking questions from time to time. Happy New Year!

The M96 that I bought is an excellent speciman of the military version (as far as I can tell) and I plan to keep it original. Maybe you've read the post: http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/mau...903-worth.html (Carl Gustafs Stads M96 1903...worth?) After reading about this caliber, I've decided that I want another rifle (sporterized) that I can use to hunt and target shoot with. I have been contacted, via another board, by the director of a Gunsmith Curriculum at a Technical Institute in a neighboring state that has offered to build what I want if I supply the parts as a class project. I'd not thought of that option before. So, I am looking for the right "parts". That is as far as this project has gotten so far. Again, I appreciate your suggestions and comments.

| Mauser lock times are a bit long for match rifles to be build on. I suggest starting with a new rifle. |
