stainless steel scratches?

can i scotchbrite a s.s. gun to remove scratches?
ive got a couple of pretty good ones on the cylinder of a sp 101.
it looks like it was dropped .

while i am at it.......
how tough would it be for a non gunsmith to swap the mainspring and trigger return springs?
i would like to lighten up the trigger pull some.
i forgot how hard this trigger is to pull!
wolf springs has the needed springs.

Did you buy the SP101 used ? if not ,the owners manual that came with the gun ,shows how to disassemble the revolver,It's fairly straight forward ,and easy to do, If you don't have the owners manual contact Ruger they will gladly send you one.

billy I would first try a tube of Semi-Crome on the scratch because the Scotchbrite will only leave a scuff that doesnt match the rest of the gun.
Is it shinney stainless or mutted stainless ?

Fine steel wool and/or 1000-1200 grit sand paper. The ultra fine sand paper will put a nice polish on it. If you have a matte finish then perhaps you need to send it to Ruger ?

only 6 or 8 leftover parts.(they are just lil ones... it wont matter)
i wont have any trouble installing springs.

A scotch brite pad or steel wool will scratch it also. You just have to do the entire thing to make it uniform. When I tried that, you could still tell it was different then the rest, the scratch was gone but them there was this bright shiny patch, many finer scratches so to speak, so I just did the entire thing. In the end, I wished I wouldn't have scratched it to begin with, buy then, don't we all. Buy the way, what I scratched wasn't a firearm, but it was stainless steel none the less...

update;
i used 400 superfine grit sand paper on it and finished it with 2000 grit .
it looks a LOT better.
almost all of the scratches are gone except 2 very small deep ones.

Looks good Billy. Not much you can do with those 2 little ones unless you keep at it.
