Barrel Options

One of my nieghbors just bought the 500 barrel for his NEF. He said he wants to use it on antelope. One thing this got me to thinking of is I would like to see one in 460. I have read quite a bit on the revolvers and think it would be fun to have in a rifle. You can shoot 460, 454 and 45LC out of the same barrel. Just bored and thought I might explore options some would like to offered in these guns.

The don't make them in a S&W .460 but they do make them in a wide variety a of calibers!

I know but is there a caliber that you would like to see that they don't have? I think they do have most but like I said I think the 460 would be a nice option.

I would order a .460 the first day they were available. I have the .500 and it is a lot of fun for plinking.

T/C offers a .460, but that is a lot of cash for a plinking rifle. If you wanted to hunt with it, it would be well worth it.

A couple of the guys on Greybeard's Forums have reamed .45 cal Handi Rifle chambers to .460 specs. I would rather have a factory barrel, myself.

I agree with the factory barrel. Seems like if you just reamed it there is so much more presure there could be some problems, but that is just a guess on my part haven't even looked at the difference.

No its very safe to ream one out. Somebody could make one for you. You'd have to buy the gun in 45 colt then get the work done.

I know sometimes reaming out to a different caliber isn't bad at all, it is done quite often. The thing you have to look at is preasures, I still haven't looked at the difference in the 460 ad 45,I will and will get back with you when I do.

Pressure is not a problem, and reaming is not a problem. To get all the info, go to
go2gbo.com, forums, H&R NEF, Centerfire Rifles and then the FAQs. I'm going to ream my .357 Mag. Handi to .357 Maximum very soon. I've got seven Handis and they're all shooters.
I would want it on a SB2 (High Pressure) frame rather than a SB1 (pistol or shotgun) frame. It could well be unsafe on the shotgun frame.

The simplest solution is just get a .45-70. Most accurate, and does it all.

Right now mine has a 308 barrel on it. Thanks for the referance. As long as the pressure is not a problem I think I might give that a try, if I can find someone to ream it out. From what I have seen of the 460 pistols I am really wondering about it in a rifle.

As for the 45-70 can't argue that but it is something a lot of people have, I like stuff that is almost unique or hard to find. Not the bandwagon kind of guy, most of the time.

I had my 22/250 reamed out to a Ackly Improved, check it out in the other NEF thread. I'm going to get a .204 Ruger bbl next.

I too have wondered about the performance of the .460 in a rifle. I would definitely buy one. They should at least offer the .454 Casull. But they dont. I dont see where the pressure would be a problem. I mean they offer the Handi Rifles in .30-06. Some '06 loads push 60,000 psi right? I dont have my reloading manuals in front of me but I cant see the .460 operating any higher than that. And I wouldnt think that they would use different barrel metal for different calibers---stronger for more powerful calibers, weaker for less powerful----It seems like it would be cheaper just to make all the barrels out of the same steel, so they should all be the same strength.
