| .410/ 45 LC barrel for .45-70?
hey guys! just got back from putting lead downrange with my H & R handi-rifle in .45-70 (awesome experiance!!) I'd love to have something to shoot that doesn't beat me down like my .45-70. Can I order the .410/ 45 lc barrel for my SB2 frame? what kind of range can i expect with the .45 lc to be accurate?? Any advice you can offer to a rifle newbie would be greatly appreciated!! thanks bunches!! |

You can put the .45/.410 barrel on the SB2 frame. A better choice I think would be the .357 or .44 magnums. They're both excellent shooters with very available factory ammo. Also, they can easily be reamed to .357 Maximum and .445 Super Magnum. That way, you can shoot .38 special, .357 Magnum, .360 Dan Wesson, .357 Maximum .44 special, .44 Russian, .44 Magnum and .445 Super Magnum. I have had both of mine reamed and they are shooters. I have the Buffalo Classic in .45/70 and would like to have the .45 Colt barrel that comes on the CR Carbine. H&R Model CR-45LC 45/70 is expensive. .45 Colt is cheap. They don't list that barrel in their Barrel Accessory Program and I believe they discontinued the .45 Colt Handi-rifle. So I don't know if I would be able to get one or not. If possible I would like to have the .45 Colt barrel reamed to .454 Casull specs--or ideally the .460S&W (might be too much pressure). |

matt760. Jump over to go2gbo.com, forums, H&R centerfire and search .460 pressure. You'll find a thread that should answer all your questions. It looks as if Tim, the moderator had one done. Pete |

I wouldn't think the pressure would be an issue. They have .30-06 barrels and some 06 loads run up around 60k psi. I read on Graybeard that the .460 S&W has a MAP of 57k while the .500 S&W (which is offered by H&R) has a MAP of 52k though I have not confirmed this. So, why not? Would it be worth it? How would the .460 perform out of a 20 or 24 inch barrel? How much would be gained, if any?

Hi Pete, fancy seeing you here. I second his advice, look for a 357 or 44Mag barrel. I have heard the 45/410 barrels aren't very accurate with 45Colt loads being there is such a jump to reach the lands. Then again there have been some that have sought to remedy this with loading brass cased 410 shells and slugs... search the 450 Mongo for that... still that is costly and there hasn't been much data on it and the results for it have been mixed. Save yourself some time and go with a 357 or 44Mag.

Anotheer thought I had, is that I have two 22 inch, 3 inch H&R single shot shotguns, 20 ga. modified and .410 full. Both shoot slugs very well, probably as well as the combo shoots .45LCs, and there's no choke tube to mess with. One of my .357s is reamed to Maximum and the other standard factory. My .44 Mag is reamed to .445 Super. Those guns handle anything I want to do in Michigan, and God forbid, some day I drew an elk tag, the .45-70 would handle that. Pete |
