Thoughts on Speer bullets?

Do any of you guys have any thoughts or reviews on Speer HotCor\UniCor bullets? I'm thinking of buying some 130 gr. for deer sniping with my new .270 but they aren't that popular around here. I'm also thinking of the Sierra 130 gr. ProHunter. I've had excellent field results with 150 gr. Hornady SpirePoint Interlocks in .30 cal., but don't want the cannelure. Decisions, decisions...

i usually like red tipped pills, but give speer a try. if they shoot well for you, great. a 130gr bullet is plenty for the largest deer.

Speer bullets will work fine on any whitetail that walks. Yiou don't need some fancy tipped or controled expansion bullet for deer. The bullet companies have tricked people into thinking that you need these super duper bullets for deer.

Well if you go back to the day, when many a deer were taken with the good ole' 30-30, I don't think those were any special bullets. So I'd have to agree with you pumpkinheaver. If them plain old 30-30 bullets worked for years, I have to think the old saying works here as well. And that is, if it aint broke, don't fix it. lol But I've been known to be wrong. LOL

I have used a lot of Speer Hotcor Bullets..Not a bad bullet for the price,and good performer at higher velocities as far as expansion and staying together on impact...

I have used run of the mill speer spitzers in my .30-'06 to take caribou and black bear and they worked perfectly.

Picked some up too practice reloading and shooting my 7mm with. Havnt started yet but being that you can buy about 2X as much it cant be that bad of a deal. Isnt that what federal loads their blue boxed ammo with? I used this on an elk with my 303 and it didnt work "too" bad but was no premium bullet.

I have used Speer Hot Cor bullets on many occasions, they work just fine on deer and hogs.

I finally got the Speer Reloading manual 13th Edition, delivered yesterday, that both you T-man and Mooseman684 suggested and have begun reading it. The first few pages are on their bullets and from what I've read, I'd try them. As far as pricing, I haven't looked into that yet. Still a little ways away from loading my first ones. Nothings here yet. lol

Told them to hold and ship complete... Then still have to get powder and primers. I'll start another thread for my questions regarding those...

Speer has a good product. I cut my teeth on Speer reload manuals, very comprehensive.

Another good projectile valuse that performs, remington Corelokt

I've always used Sierra Spitzer Boat Tails for deer, and Nosler Partitions for moose. I'm sure there are lots of other good bullets out there.

I use the Speer Hot Core .311 150 gr. Spitizer in my Mosin M44 and SKS rifles. I get about 1" groups out of the SKS and 2" out of the Mosin. I'm just getting back into deer hunting this year,but my good friend kills deer with this bullet every year.

I use the Speer 120 Gr. HotCor spitzer in my 7mm Rem Mag. and have taken 15 whitetail, muley and antelope with them. Have not lost one animal. Sadly I don't think Speer manufactures the 120 Gr. anymore and will have to move to the 130 Gr. bullet when I finally run out.

Which bullet weight were you using, and at what sort of velocity (whether read from manual or chronographed)? I ask because I'm thinking of taking my SMLE hunting in the new year, and if you can kill an elk with the .303 then I'm likely to be able to knock over anything I'll be shooting at (most likely feral goats and swine).

Shot an Impala with a 140gr 6.5mm Hot-Cor at 100 yards, mv 2700'/s. Frontal shot, just off centre. Bullet disintegrated - heavy meat damage. Useless bullet.

Shot a Black Wildebeest with a 140gr 6.5mm Grand Slam (discontinued now!) at 328yards, mv 2730'/s. Angled shot, through heavy left shoulder and heart. Bullet exited behind opposite shoulder. Excellent bullet.

I have some Speer 168 Gold Match bullets that I can't find the right recipe for. They just won't group good.
