If you ammortize the $10 cost of a can of Imperial size wax over the lifetime of the average handloader...it would hardly seem to make it worth any time or trouble to 'make your own'. I have the can I bought 9 years ago.........there have to be better ways to save a buck.

Is WD40 to thin to be a good case lube? I am thinking of going the synthetic auto oil route. 20W is what I saw a guy using in a youtube video.

I use PAM, the regular kind not the butter flavored. When I run out of it I will make some like Bill. I think it may last a few years though. Don't use a penetrating oil. It could ruin your primers. I lube my cases by putting them in a zip-lock bag and giving them a spritz with the PAM. I then work the cases around until they have a lite coat of oil on them. I have also used chap stick. I tried it because someone asked if it would work. It did.

I can't be convinced that anything here is better than imperial sizing die wax. I was wanting to turn necks in a .222 that had a tight chamber for a factory gun, but was certainly no tight neck. I ended up finding some thick LC .223, pushing the shoulders back, trimming to length, and then turning the necks. RCBS case lube on the pad was leaving a crinkle in the shoulder. Synthetic motor oil... no good. Multi-purpose grease with teflon....not even close. Cam installation grease with sooooo much moly it will plug an oil filter in 20 minutes....close, but no cigar. Various mixtures of the above...still wouldn't do it. Right out of the can imperial die wax....small lube dent in the shoulder. Next case I wiped the wax on and then wiped it off very lightly with my already waxey fingers....perfection. Leave too much wax and you'll get a lube dent, not enough and you'll get a sticky a case.
Point? All of your mixtures may be enough to smooth out the process when you're sizing a case just a little with a carbide die, but if you want the best there is no other choice but imperial die wax. If you can push a shoulder back with it then it's pretty good stuff. It's pretty cheap too.

I'm a do it, build it, make it yourself kinda guy. I like the idea of making my own case lube, but the imperial die wax is such a good product at a good price that there just isn't any point on this one.

Billy, you got me wondering if Leather New would work. It's a liquid glycerine saddle soap. Saddle soap is basically lanolin. I have to have a lot of it around here for all the saddles and tack. So if there's a way to use it in reloading that'll be cool.

Apparently IMBILLT gets a royalty check for every Imperial Sizing Wax sale. I like chap stick too. Sharps_74 from what I've read on the cast bullet sites anything with Lanolin in it makes a good case lube.

All right Billy, you sucked me into trying your secret recipe here. I am assuming that the 91% alcohol called for is isopropyl, since I found it in that concentration.

lately I've been using Pam and Bag Balm(lanolin found in pet section at Walmart). I used to use just the Pam, but now I use them together. I throw the cases in a one gallon baggie. I give them a short shot of Pam and put a dab(less than a quarter teaspoon) of Bag Balm in the bag. The Pam melts the lanolin and it coats the cases. I work the cases around in the bag until they are all coated and dump them on a sheet of news paper. I reuse the same baggie. The lanolin drys in it and you can re-melt it with another shot of Pam.

Well today was the big day. I loaded up 50 .223 cases in a loading block, and spritzed them with Hornady One Shot Case Lube. I loaded 50 into another block, and spritzed them with Billy's Homemade Lube And Slug Seasoning. The results>>>.
Homemade stuff was much easier to size. Even had one case stuck with the Hornady's. Nasty feeling on my fingers, though. But since the Hornady's cost about twice as much as Billy's, I guess Hornady loses.

Lately I have been using liquid car wax, let it dry, size and throw in a tumbler. The media polishesoff the wax film. My media is over three years old and I polish a LOT of brass.

Hello, everyone. I've been browsing here for a while, but never seemed to have time to post anything of importance. Lots of good stuff to read here, though.
On the subjuct of case lube, I've been using the same small can of STP that I bought about thirty years ago!! Transferred it into a small flip-top bottle and I have never had a stuck case. Used sparingly, to prevent dents, it does a wonderful job. And I don't mind cleaning the cases with a cloth afterwards. It's just part of the inspection process!
Best regards...
KarlB

Hi Everyone
Wm Penn Red Label: MP No 2 Lithium Based Multi Purpose GREASE! On a home made high density foam "lube pad", as we had been taught in the beginning many moons ago, And I only wipe the excess off with a paper napkin as in toilet paper.
Reloading:
8X60S: Winchester and Frontier (both ex 30-06) and RWS cases,
.303: Winchester, R-P and our own PMP cases.
6.5X57 Mauser: R-P (ex 8X57) and RWS cases.
Not a single seizure the past 15 years!
