I use just about anything I find. The main thing is to inspect before and after each step to catch any bad brass, brass that is cracked or looks unuseable. Remember to always inspect, even once fired brass may be bad.

The only way I can afford to fire lots of .223 is pick up lots of free range brass. My Saiga dents the ones I shoot horribly.

I always pick up any old brass that I can. Most of the ranges that I go to are "field" ranges where the public uses them at no charge. The place is usually littered with brass and trash. When I leave, the place is clean of trash too.
I have found that most people don't reload which makes it nicer for those of us who do. It sure helps cut down the cost of shooting our firearms.
The unusable brass can also be turned in for scrap and help put a little extra to the budget for reloading supplies.

Go ahead and pick up those cases, inspect them and load any that don't show any problems. Anything left behind was almost certainly left behind by someone who doesn't reload and is either berdan primed or if boxer primed, it's probably new or a once-fired commercial reload.
