How long can I store powder before it goes bad?

Just curious. Reloading stuff is such a pain to get locally, I tend to hoard it whenever I can, which leads me to wanting to buy 4lb jugs of it and stash it in my climate-controlled finished basement. Question is: How long can I store it before it goes bad?

Email the powder Co.and ask them. I would say for a long time but they are the experts.I know it lasts a long time in surplus military cartridges. Some clear back in the 1930,s. sam.

I have powder that is 40 years old and is still fine. As long as it is stored sealed in a cool dry place it will last for years...

I am still using a jug of Red Dot and a can of Pyrodex - both bought in 1976.

At K-mart......

Back when they were the biggest firearms retailer in the US.

How times have changed.

I did notice that the Red Dot has been reformulated - my recently purchased bottle has a different color appearance to the powder.
Unique has also been reformulated, to burn cleaner - so the old powders can be slightly different than the newer versions.

As long as the powder is properly stored it should last a lifetime. You should inspect your powder at least once a year. Smell it and look it over. If it has gone bad it should have a very distinct odor. This is one of my favorite Ed Harris quotes reguarding this subject.

"If you have a rusty can and strong vinegar odor, the powder has deteriorated to a point where it makes great fertilizer for your garden or lawn. This time of year I recommend tomatoes!"

I smell my powder every time I open the container. I know I don't have to, but I believe it's better to be safe than sorry.

Big Dog Alliant Promo is supposed to be the same as the REAL Red Dot.

I guess I'll really start hoarding, then...

Cool. What about primers? Do they last forever (under favorable storage conditions), too?

Yeah, they'll be good long after you're dead.

I realize that you are refering to smokeless powder, but in my own world, I've had the real stuff, stored in it's original contaner, sealed with only it's original screw-down cap last around forty that's (40) years! Yeah that's right I've been useing the real stuff off and on since I was in my twenties!

Somehow, that just doesn't sound comforting.

I had some 25 year old H414 I found a jug of I had hidden. It worked fine on some .270 reloads. I did do a sniff and eyeball test before I used it.
