Trading soft bullet for velocity

Not sure if this the right place to post or not. I went to the range today with my Kel-tec PF-9 9mm. It wears my hand out with recoil using factory target loads. My question is do you think if I lowered the velocity and used a lead cast bullet it would equal out? From what I understand the more the bullet mushrooms the more energy is transfered to your target. So my theory is lower the velocity and use a cast bullet to transfer more of the energy to the target. What do you experts think? Am I way off in left field? Thanks Pontiac P.S. Please don't turn this into a 9mm bashing thread.

i suppose of you started with a min. load and followed the directions in the manual for a lead bullet as long as it fed reliably .
it would work fine.

I know this doesn't answer your question. Load some ammo that is both comfortable to shoot and accurate. The most important things are to hit your target and be able to follow up if needed. You need something that doesnt make you flinch. If you go with cast use a bullet with a large meplat. If you use jacketed, use a hollow point or soft point that expands at lower velocities.
