Cast Lead Load for 7.62x54R

Using a gas checked Lee 185 gn. .312 bullet, #2 alloy, a standard WLR primer, 27 gn of Accurate 5774, I have gotten fair results. I have used both new Priv Partisan brass and Winchester Metric and can't tell any difference. I also loaded 26 gn and 28 gn of the Acc 5774 and it didn't shoot as well.

Yeah, Winchester 7.62X54R does have some pretty tight primer pockets.

I heard it was really S&B brass, anyway.

I use IMR 4350 powder , 50 grains and Sierra 303cal. .311 diameter 150 grain spitzer # 2300 and I get good results. I really liked the 125 grain buttet , very comfortable but I couldn't get the OAL I wanted. It wasn't going into the barrel far enough because the bullet is so short so regretfully I quit using it. 180 grain and up have a poor target pattern even at 100 yds., at least in my rifle. I would use it for big game at 50 - 75 yds. but I would shoulder pad.

Hey dude, what is S+B stand for. They really are hard to prime. What 7.62 brass is simplier to prime ?

S&B, not S+B.

Stands for Sellior And Bellot, a European ammo manufacturer.

Almost any other manufacturer of 7.62X54R is easier to prime. Prvi Partizan springs to mind as an alternative.

If you're using a Lee press to prime, it will be tougher as it primes while you're pulling up. Get one of their Ram Primes and you can then prime pushing DOWN on the handle (upstroke of the press) and those Winchester cases are then a snap to prime.

My ram prime does work fine on the Winchesters, but the hand primer is so much easier and faster.

That too. I also have a Lee Whack-A-Mole for this caliber, and that's pretty easy to use to put primers in. If you get one a little crooked before giving it a whack, it then calls for a change of britches, but...

You guys do realize that the original posts on this thread were a year ago...

That said, Winchester primers fit Win and S&B brass, but everything else is a bear as the pockets tend to be a little shallow.

I may sell off my Win/S&B brass if Win primers continue to be hard to find.

Even Winchester primers are harder to seat in Win brass than other brass.

Well as I look at my boxes of reloads in 7.62X54R, I have Norma, Lapua, Privi Partizan, Winchester, and JMS brass.

I sorta like the JMS stuff. Wish I would have bought of few more hundred of the fully loaded ammo they came with at 5 bucks/bag of 20.

Great info on here for reloading for mosin.I have made similar loads and they work well. The 9130 groups real nice at 100 and 200 yards for me using the formulas in the Lyman book at the "suggested starting grains" level.

I have 2 questions for you guys.

1) What is the original load the 9130 was meant to shoot so the strike on paper matches how you set your elevation sight ?
ie. If you set your elevation sight to 300 meters, bullet will strike bull or close to it at 300 meters on a target.
Specific bullet weight, type, powder etc. If anyone knows.

2) There is a chart in the Hornady book using 110 grain bullets.
Muzzle velocity speeds on that chart start at 2800 ft/sec and go up to around 3200 ft/sec.
I'm thinking of trying a 2900-3000 ft/sec load for 500 and 600 meters to keep the bullet supersonic at those distances.
Has anyone tried that one ?

Thanks in advance for sharing any info. Much appreciated.

All those numbers make Grok's head hurt.

Seriously, the longest course on any range near me is 200 yards. And I use 147 grain bullets, and do not have a chronometer to measure the velocities.
