Welcome Ford Trucker, Remember for every action there is an equal and oposite reaction. So unless you had something behind the shell to prevent it from moving backwards, the casing and the bullet would fly in oposite directions, one of them being straight back at you.

I very, very highly suggest - Don't Do This!!

The case will blow out the side, I know a kid who did that with an empty shell and the force of the primer hurt him. In a firearm the only reaction is to push the bullet out the barrel, in a vise the reaction will to blow out the path of least resistance.

equal reaction

I've always wondered what would happen if I dumped a big pan of freezing ice water on my wife's head while she was sleeping.......I think you would get a similar reaction hitting that cartridge.

Except with the cartridge in a vice, you have a chance to live

Gawd, whatever happened the ususal dosage of common sense?

Next question: 'if I look down the barrel of my gun when I pull the trigger can I see the bullet about to rip my head off?'

I gotta end this reply before I rip the monitor away from the computer and toss it across the room, LOL.

Dale, what happens when I fill my shoes with gravel and wear the left one on the right foot and vice versa? If I hit myself really hard on the kneecap with a hammer, does it hurt less when I wear hearing protection?

When I was a kid I put a .22 in a tree trunk and hid around the corner of the house and shot it with a pellet gun. The bullet stayed put and the hull came back into the side of the house hard enough to put a perfect impression of the case in the wood. I also once filled a pimento jar with firecracker powder stuck it in a five lb. coffee can and lit the fuse. Gawd, how did I ever live to be this old?

Have any of you ever watched Myth Busters? They duplicated the myth of the guys going frog gigging and having to use a .22 bullet in place of a fuse. It would go off after it got hot enough and usually hit their test dummy around the knee, thigh, crotch area. They said it wouldn't have enough power to do much more than break the skin but I don't think there was anything stopping the lead for moving. They should've tried a 22 mag. or a CCI Stinger too.

There is a fair chance you could get case failure causing brass shrapnel to spray back at you. Wouldn't be much fun.

Did you ever try an old brass carburetor float? Makes a great bomb casing when loaded with firecracker powder, gunpowder, powdered aluminum/sulphur mix, etc. Just make sure you have enough fuse and a place to hide.

Not all of us are born with enough common sense.
Got a Superman cape and shirt one day some 40 something years ago. Ran across yard to hill to the neighbors driveway, gave a good ummph upward...up, up, up and .................................................. .......
fell flat on my white boy face.
Not that I've done this (wink) but wacked a cut off shotgun shell secured in a vise. The primer goes the opposite way! Thank God, that boy still had both eyes but brass shapnel logded in fleshy part of left ring finger that finally worked it's way out a year later.

This idiot at work would put a pimer on the floor and hit it with a 3# hammer! Stupid gdsobdmfposalcoholicdrugaddictedhomopervert
bossesbassfishingdoghumping bosses moronic son.
Oh gezz, fmj, dont get all worked up!

Don't hold yourself back.

I have a .38 case on my coffee table as a conversation piece. I dropped it and just by a one in a million chance it fired.
Its freakin shrapnel. The bullet is the biggest resistance. Luckily the bullet didnt go far. The case is unregonizable as a 38. It exploded in every direction since it wasnt contained in a guns chamber.

Talking

I have two cases somewhere, that I found at the range one day. A .40SW shot in a .45ACP chamber, and a 9mm fired in a .40SW chamber. Cool reverse bottlenecks! Shocked me that they even fired - shoulda gone far down the chamber, out of reach of the firing pin!
Had a shooting buddy shoot a filled CO2 cartridge (the little one for pellet guns) at 25 yards with his .22. The CO2 cartridge zipped back to him and hit him in the chest. Hehehe. Only thing hurt was his pride.

an interesting question..I have three .38sp rounds that I screwed up reloading and inserted the bullet WAY TO FAR into the shell (like all the way in.)

how dangerous would it be to drill a few holes in a 2x4 board and use the primers as a .22 target out about 5 yards?
