| Super Moderator ![]() | Take this with a huge helping of salt, but the way I'd go about making it inert would be to drill the case with a non-ferrous drill bit. Only kind I know of is Titanium.

| I dont understand how you got all the art work in that casing but if that is a .45 Colt low to medium pressure load go ahead and shoot it.All it will do is straighten the casing out.You wont even know the difference.I will never tell you do something that is the least bit dangerous and that I havnt done. But if you dont want to shoot them, put them in your bullet knocker, find a piece of furnature vaneer if possible or a knot in a pine 2+4 and knock the bullet out.Knocking a bullet out amounts to the same thing as firing it.I would just shoot it and have many times.Check rhe casing lengths and back your die off the crimping ring just a smidjen. It also looks like you have wax buildup in your die.For GOD sake dont be drilling on that casing! Heat can and will ignite powder,Drills create heat. sam. Last edited by samuel; 10-21-2007 at 09:25 AM. |

| spiritual counselor ![]() ![]() | thanks! my reloading methods leave much to be desired! i guess i didnt flare the case mouths enough when i started this batch because when i saw what was happening i flared the other 90 cases a little more. and that didnt happen any more 6.8 of greendot the lead bullet overlapped the case and on the one shown i removed the lead that was on the outside of the case.

| I could have told you that if I had thought back to my begining days of loading straight wall casings with cast bullets.I shot several in those days without removing the little bit of lead. The way I judge if I have enough flare is if I can just feel the flare in the bullet seating die then I have all I can get. samuel. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | That is true, but it takes a certain amount of heat to ignite powder. I'm pretty sure if it's cool enough to touch it won't ignite powder. A titanium drill bit used carefully in brass would create far less heat than a ferrous drill bit. My biggest worry would be the bit sparking against the much more abrasive powder after punching through the brass, but I'd mainly be worried if the bit was ferrous. So that would be my suggestion for making a complete cartridge "inert". I completely agree that removing the bullet with a bullet puller or pliers would be much safer than drilling the case. As far as firing it as it goes, I guess it would be ok if it were loaded to SAAMI specs and fired in a gun capable of handling more powerful loads. I'd be concerned about a pressure spike if it were used it something without as much of a safety factor.

| you could always try pulling the bullet out with a pair of vice grips, dumping out the powder and then resizing the case and if it doesnt come out to spec throw it away. |

| The problem is a 250gr .45 bullet is seated 3/4th,s of its length and crimped.A pair of pliars will crush the nose and fail to extract it.If pliars are desired use a large set of sidecuts, put the cartridge back in the press, take the die out,run the bullet through the top of the press,go straight in clamping the bullet, holding it firmly and pull the ram back down. This also works well with bottleneck cartridges when you dont have a bullet puller or in the case of varmint bullets which crush with a puller.I have often pulled varmint bullets this way and only having a little notch on each side, used them over after pulling. If you grip them too tight or not tight enough you will have deep notches or long marks up the sides rendering them useless. sam. |

| Can I help you? I worked in Nashville quite a bit and I am sure we can meet on Broadway and play with your guns and no one will even notice us. sam. |

| Mr. Fixit ![]() | I agree with Sam, load 'em up and shoot em. FWIW, the best investment I ever made was my Hornady Cam-Lock bullet puller. The collets are a bit pricey, but they are great for pulling heavy-crimped bullets.
