| Oal .30-06
I just bought a howa 1500 in the .30-06. I was reloading last night and was playing around with different OAL's and when I loaded one to the max OAL the bullet showed about a .10" land marks were I colored it. So I seated in deeper and it chambered much smoother without the marks. My question is, shouldnt the rifle take a standard OAL bullet without touching the lands? I shot the gun sunday with around 40 rounds of reloads with an OAL of 3.340", I had just bought the rifle and was doing some quick bullets to shoot it without setting the rifles own OAL. Is the OAL length of 3.340" just a guide to tell you not to go over that in any gun. I read somewhere that howas have deep throats so its hard to load a bullet to the point of just the starting of the lands. The gun seems to shoot alright, I needed to adjust the trigger when I got home, it was pretty bad. The one thing I dont like about this gun is you cant adjust all of the travel out of the trigger. Theres some kind of safety deal on it where if you adjust all the travel out of it, the saety doenst work.

Since Ammo is loaded to fit a variety of guns, the standard is set by specification to standard chamberings. Most Competition shooters will set the bullets to just touch the rifling when fully chambered. this seems to give the best accuracy. Exceeding the OAL spec can cause problems feeding, jamming in the magazine, etc.Different weight bullets also have different Ogives due to design, that you may have to compensate for. Rich
