| barrel twist for 68 grain
i have a 24" upper on a ar-15 lower, and a winchester model 70 stealth, i know each rifle will do very welln on there own, but is a 1-9 twist to fast or slow for 68 grain hpbt. i am new to reloading and i read all i can and also know each powder primer, brass combo will work differently in each rifle. i am simply trying to cut down on the numerous weights and types of bullets. but your advice is most happily accepted |

a 68 gr bullet may or may not stabilize for you with a 1-9twist. its borderline. without double checking, the winchester may have a 1-12 twist which would probably shoot poorly with that weight bullet.

The 1:9 twist rate will stabilize the 68gr bullet. I have a Bushmaster upper with a 1:9 twist as well as one with a 1:7 twist rate. They both shoot the 69gr sierra match king about the same. Now getting up over the 69gr is another story for the 1:9. I tried the 77gr and they were not as accurate. Still not unacceptable but just not as accurate.

Check the bullet manufacturer for specific recommendations on twist. Hornady says both their 68 and 75 BTHP will work in 1-9.
