Black Powder Load Info for 45-70

I have loaded many many cartriges but have never used goex except for muzzle loading. I just need a starting point for black powder loads for my 45-70. I can work up from there. I will be loading 300 grain bullets. Like I said I just need a starting point.

Well, the original load was a 405 with 70 grains of black. 70 ought to be a nice starting load with a 300 grain bullet. Don't leave any air space in the cartridge.

I shoot blackpowder cartridge from my Ruger #1 .45-70. My favorite load is a 320 gr. lead bullet and 55 grs. of FFg or Pyrodex R. It's a mild load for all-day shooting from the not-too-heavy Ruger.

A full case of powder (compressed on loading) and the 320 gr. bullet is a good load also. Kicks a bit more but nothing too bad.

I'd recommend the 55 gr. load for your 300 gr. bullets. If you want you can use a small wad to hold the powder in place. Personally, I've never had a problem with a small airspace in the cartridge.
