7.62x54r bullet question

I am going to load some lighter bullets in the Russian(110 or125) now should I use 308 or 310-311 bullets? my Lyman man. says 308 I think 310 or 311 would be better, maybe some 123gr. sks bullets? What do you say? (Moose would most likely know).

What does your barrel Mic out at ???
That is what Determines which bullet to use....308 's will shoot fine, 310,311,and 312 diameter will create a bit more pressure, but they will swedge when fired and give more kick!
It really depends on your bore.

Most of the Russian guns are .310-.313 bores while the Finn's are closer to .308-.310. This is just for reference as, like Moose said, you choice should be based on your actual bore size.

We are going to try 308 first and see if they shoot ok, if keyholing or bad grouping we are going to try 310 next.

Try a .308 bullet in the bore at the muzzle...If it wont drop in past the Ogive it will be a .308-.309 bore!

I just bought 300 rounds and they all Mic at .311. They are tight in my 91/30 but dang, they shoot great. Whats a little more kick in something that already kicks like a mule.
They did split a case in my nephews M44 but that was bad brass. All others were fine with no sign of excessive pressure.
Mooseman, these bullets dont even come close to dropping in the bore past the ogive! I was a little afraid at first but what the heck. Russian bullets, Russian guns. Good combination. But good info on bore sizes. Your results may vary..thats my disclaimer.

Again! If you truly wish to wring out the ultimate accuracy out of your Mosin, you must slug your barrel! End of story!

Swede.
I understand but what bullets are you going to buy off the shelf if its a .309? Whats a .310? is that a .303 British?
Not to be a jerk and I know they slug differently...I have more than a few and I find ALL shoot better with the larger diameter. I know that a few of my Mosins would pass gas with a .308 and maybe hit 2,000 fps.
Sellior and Bellot ammo is great ammo but is sized small just for the undersized bores. But its reloadable.
The Mosin is very capable of pushing a few thousands of an inch bigger bullet and may improve accuracy.
Again, not an argument, just an opinion.
I know a Mosin can be incredably accurate. If it slugs at .310 then go .311
And go to the store and find a .310

Everybody tells me about how bad a Mosin kicks. I don't feel much difference beween it an any other 30 cal rifle I've ever owned except a 7.62X39.

If you pull the bullet most of the real military 7.62x54r you will find that they have a hollow base like Minie ball. It was made that way so it would work in any bore from .308 and up. My M44 is .315" but works with .312 jacketed and .314 cast. About the only 7.62x54r that are out there, that you can besure are .308 are Finn M39's or should be. Alot of the military 7.62x54R ammo that you see around today that was loaded in the 80's and 90's was made for machinegun and is loaded warmer than old rifle ammo.
