accuracy loads?

has anybody actually tried these accuracy loads that the loading manuals have?
i am almost out of varget and am thinking of buying some of the powder to do just that.

i color code my different loads.
it makes it easy on myself.

Never tried the accuracy loads but the color coding idea is great. Thanks for the tip.

Billy,
The accuracy loads in thr Sierra manual are from the barrell they used.Your barrell may be slightly different. They are usually not the most accurate for my old military surplus rifles.

I use them as a starting point and go up and down in .2 grain increments. They are a good place to start.

my manual uses a savage bvss with the same bbl. length and rate of twist as my savage 10-fp

i realize that guns that are identical down to the molecular level will shoot differently but i was wondering if this was a good starting point or should i stick to familiar powders?

I have tried, on numerous ocaissions, the listed accuracy loads in a given manual. Usualy I find a different powder/load is more accurate. If I have the powder listed for "their" accuracy load I will start there and try to duplicate it. If I dont have the powder, I try something I do have first. If all that fails (bullet selection/manufacture included), I buy another powder.

Here is what I have found to work with the .30-06, .308, and .223 for service rifle shooting:

Sort cases by headstamp

Trim to uniform length

Use Sierra bullets

Load a 85% - 90% charge of a medium burning rate powder (Varget, 4064, 4895 are good)

This produces ammo that will shoot under an inch in bolt guns. Gas guns don't do quite as good.

These are not full power loads. Just accurate.

I have found that the sierra manual accuracy loads for the AR-15 69gr match and 200gr 300 win mag were extremely accurate. I tried half grain +/- and found that the one listed was the most accurate for my rifles. I don't know if the .308 holds true but like the others have said try increasing or decreasing the powder to see what works for your rifle.

Thats how I am working up loads for my .257 Bob. I have loaded two sets one with Varget and another with H4895 behind 75g Speer bullets. So far the varget is shooting tighter but I may try some H4350 and H4064 yet.

I too color code the primers and keep different powder types in seperate boxes.

My quarter bore likes several loads and even some of those accuracy loads but it really per-forms goodest with the 115 to 120 grainers and H4831 and H4350 and the primers dont seem to make much of a difference either 210M or the standard cci large cannon primers...
