I would probably go with a Nolser Partition or Hornady Interbond and IMR 7828 powder. I've heard about some very poor results with Barnes bullets on large game and the Berger is primarily a match target bullet.

I reloaded some 150 gr Nosler Partitions for my counsin's 270 for black bear. I might have to double check, but I used 54 grains of RL-19. Supposed to push the bullet around 2800 fps. That should be good for elk. Barnes are alright, but they are a lot of money.

I would go with Nosler Partions, 140 grain, and the W760 powder at 53 grains as recommended by Nosler. Over 3000 fps. Hottest and most accurate load. See this link.

Nosler: bullets, ammunition, rifles, brass, and reloading data.

Get the Bergers, I would consider Partitions.

It s debatable. Berger says they can be used for hunting. Whether this is true, for me at least is still up in the air. I have yet to see what a bullet fired into ballistics gel looked like. Most people say that they cant be used, but on tv it seems that people are using them more and more. I would personally say a partition would be a good safe bet.

Nosler are great bullet and have a great track record on elk. Do your best in getting close, elk are very strong animals and go long distances on poor shots. A friend of mine is a guide here in Arizona, and tells stories of poor shots for people who do not spend enough time with thier gun before the hunt.

Berger does not even list a .277 bullet for big game. And most of the ones they do list for other calibers are just their match target bullets. Not a good choice at all in my opinion. They are a great match bullet, with great BC's, assuming they are on the up and up with their numbers.

Berger Bullets

My uncle used Remington bronze point on his hunt. He was turned on to the round by my Cousin Curtis. He swore by that bullet. I don't know if you can get bronze point bullets for reloading but you might like it. They liked how the bronze tip would separate and cause more damage on its own.

Ouch! From how far and what kind of rest/scope were you using? If that is at 100 yards, using a got rest, something serious is wrong.

I would recomend getting closer to the elk, 300 yards and closer. You'll get 200 more ft-lbs and wont have to have that 10-13 inch hold over.
