| Troll B' Gone ![]() ![]() | .300 Win Mag Powder
Picked up a set of dies for my .300 Win mag today, but I'm not sure what powder to go with, for all of you handloaders, what powder has worked best in your .300 WM? any input will be much appreciated.

Yep, H4831 is probably the most tried and true for the big mags. It is all I have ever used. Hodgdon has a new powder out called Hybrid 100V. It seems to get another 100-150 fps with less powder and less pressure when compared to the H4831. May be worth a try if you can find someone with it in stock. I've heard good things about the Alliant Reloader powder (Reloader 22, 25), but have not personally used it. Reloading Data Ron |

that hybrid is supposed to be real close to the old h-450 which is close to rl-19. rl-22 would probably be a better second choice for the 300, after 4831. |

I agree with LeftyO.Also, the longer the barrel and the larger the capacity in casing, the slower the burnrate. sam.

Thank you very much gentlemen, I will be picking up a can of H4831, and I will see how it shoots in my gun. I appreciate the input.

I dont own a .300wm but I would have suggested H4831 as it works well in my .338wm but I found RL22 REALLY shoots well . So you may want to give that a try.

The best powders for a given cartridge typically fall within a fairly narrow burn rate range. For sure H4831 is close to ideal for the big mags. So, you will find other powders that may work which are close to the H4831 burn rate. The other issue of course not quantified by burn rate is quality and consistency, and for those folk in colder climates temperature sensitivity. See this burn rate chart to see what powders could work for you. Powder Burn Rates Ron |

Dont know why, but my old 77 likes the imr 4350 best. Each rifle is an individual, so try a few different ones like the afore mentioned 4831 and possibly H870 if it is still available.

Remember,if you are going to hunt in colder climates, mag primers are required. sam.

I ALWAYS use mag primers on slow burning powders because they are a little bit harder to ignite.

Slow burning powders are not harder to ignite, but large charges are. My experience matches AKHunter's. Either IMR 4831, H4831, and or RL-22 work fine. I don't bother with bullets under 180 grains in the 300 WM.

I use 69.0 grains of IMR-4350 or 72.0 gr. of IMR 4831 for 180 gr. bullets... I have also loaded 59.0 gr. of IMR 4895 with 180 gr. Bullets and got some nice accuracy ! Rich

How are you going to use slower burn rate without using more powder? All I know ---ah,to hell with it let the experts have it--I can find something that fits my lower brain capacity to do. sam. Last edited by samuel; 05-17-2008 at 02:01 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost | |

I've had really good luck with the Alliant powders both in RL-19 and RL-22. I typically shoot the 200gr sierra match king bullet with it and the RL-22 worked great. Sierra's manual recommends the AA-3100 for the 180 and 190 for accuracy. My gun grouped best with the RL-22. Good luck |
