I was at the range today with my 995. While practicing rapid fire at targets at various ranges and angles, it fell apart in my hand. The front sight assembly came adrift, and the heat shield fell right off.
Even if repaired, I'm not sure I will trust it again.
Now I need to find another carbine to keep my battery up to snuff--but I don't feel real secure with the Hi-Point anymore--if it an fail me like this at the range, it can fail me when the chips are down. And I live in a fairly rough area.

Check out the Kel-Tec sub2000s. I keep hearing really good stuff about them.
This gun pleasently turned out to be a pretty fun and semi reliable toy. Fun. but no M-1 carbine. Don't trust them to be there when you need a (rough area) gun
HK makes a carbine called the HK-94 that is a semi-auto-only version of the MP5 with a much longer barrel built to comply with US firearms regulations that would do you well. It isn't cheap though; I'm talking about $1300 to $1500 and a long search to find one. At any given time if you are lucky you might find one or two on Gunbroker.com, but don't hold your breath waiting for one to turn up in your local gun shop.
Is there a reason why you can't use a real rifle like an AK, Mini-14, AR-15, etc.? If not, I would use the pistol ammo in my pistols and get a rifle. I know some people like to use the same ammo in their long gun and pistol, but I don't see much point in carrying something as big as a rifle without getting rifle ballistics. Just my two cents... If you must have a pistol caliber long gun, you may want to look at something like a 9mm AR-15. You could always get a second upper with a little more power later if you wanted to...

the hi-point carbine has a 2 piece front site so you can take the upper part off to mount a scope the bottom is held on with 2 set screws..it sounds like the set screws came loose- the heat shield is indexed under the front site so when your site came off your heat shield came off too--that being said the gun will still fire and function with no issues
also call hi point 419-747-6095 and get a new front site ( for free) and lock tite that sucker on this time!! ( lifetime no questions asked warranty & American Made--try that with your 1500.00 HK's)

Kel tec has a cool factor but ergometrics are not one of them. You have to put your ear down on the steel recoil tube. My cheek gets bruised. The front sight tends to drift around. If you chamber a round with the gun folded it is possible to discharge a round without benefit of a chamber or barrel.
Better get an AR or AK if you want maximum reliability and performance. A 1300 dollar pistol carbine doesn't make any sense in my book.
The price point for a pistol cartridge carbine is very narrow in my book. HP and Keltec both fill the bill. Each have their strengths.

If a pistol cal. carbine is what you are after the Beretta CX Storm seems good a buddies of mine has one with an eotech mounted and it seems reliable, with a name like Beretta I would expect nothing less. It is mightly fun to shoot to.

i had a keltec su2000 and sold it after i bought my highpoints. i had a few screws loose on one of my highpoints but a little bit of loctite and they never came loose again.just use the removable loctite incase you wanna take it apart one day.
Yes these are great guns until you start shooting them a bit.
Trying to claim they are up to par with the semi-auto versions of rifles and carbines and SMG's used by various military and LE Agencies is silly at best.
They are range toys and useable for self defense in a pinch but not much more.
My advice is get it fixed and trade up to something else.
Ive owned all the semi auto pistols and they have worked flawlessly....never owned one of the rifles though...I dont see the point in pistol caliber carbines...a rifle should be powerful...in my book anyways.

I've had my hi-point carbine for about 10 years now, I'd guess. I've probably put around 8000-10000 rounds through it, just perform basic maintenance on it and make sure everything is nice and tight after every couple of range trips...never had an issue.

my question is this , have you recently taken it apart . there is no reason for them to fall apart unless they wern't put back together tight enough. if the only thing that happend was the heat shield an the sight then thats not a real issue, just an oops.

One of the advantages to having a pistol round in a rifle/carbine is you can share ammo, and sometimes mags with your sidearm.
