Wink Maine Teacher Shock: Soldiers Went to Public School

Maine Teacher Shock: Soldiers Went to Public School
(2003-02-28) -- Public school teachers in Maine were shocked to learn yesterday that most soldiers stationed near Iraq were educated in public schools. The startling revelation comes after some teachers allegedly told children that their military parents' service is unethical.

"We're baffled," said one unnamed teacher. "We spent years teaching them that all war is unethical, and then they go off and enlist in the Army."

A spokesman for the National Education Association blamed bad parenting for large numbers of public school graduates in the military.

"You can only do so much in seven hours per day, for 180 days per year for 12 years," she said. "Apparently we often can't overcome the influence of the parents' ignorance and immorality."

If the shoes fits...wear it. I'm directing my comments to those posters who continue to "generalize" when they make accusing statements.

...and I thought this forum was for humor. Why repeat a thread that's on The Gun Room?

Personally, I don't find this thread humorous. It should be directed specifically to those specific educators in Maine who are involved in making such rediculous statements. I agree that they should be confronted but why accuse every educator for what certain people said.

I'm sure you're aware of the backgrounds of many of us on G&G and that I was a public school educator before retiring. That in itself doesn't make me an expert on anything but I did learn not to generalize when making statements.

Your generalization is completely out of line with the truth of the situation. If you would take enough time to learn specifics of this case you might be able to distinguish who the culpirts really were and limit your accusing statements to those involved. When you can site specifics I will join in your battle. I'm angry that the reported statements were made, too, but lets nail the specific individuals involved and let the other innocent people in the field of education do their jobs.

It's just like you were accusing me of making those kind of statements and this really pixxes me off.

1,000 pardons

Oxford,

You are right, again. I must work on being specific in my posts. I meant to say the anonnymous source quoted in the article from the NEA is pink in the middle, as is the un named teacher.

I understand that generalizations can do damage and I will work on not being general, but very specific.

But even you may see the fact that there are a staggering amount of leftist attitudes in the teaching profession. When I posted my comments I was under the assumption that people would weed that out. I clearly am not against all teachers, but I was guilty of the same generalization fault as the teacher quoted as saying, "Apparently we often can't overcome the influence of the parents' ignorance and immorality."

This was a satire post....the punch line was that so many people who attended public schools joined the milatary...despite the teachers effort to make them peace loveing liberals..

Ok Sniper[MI]...everythings's cool again.

After writing my earlier post above, I moved to the gun room's thread on the same subject and found your post which cited specific URL's on this subject. Won't repeat what I wrote there but I believe we're on the same page again.

Thanks for staying with this subject till we've got it more clearly identified who the "bastid's' were who made those statements.

Doglips: I was seeing so much red that I missed the satire. You got me again.(ha) Can't wait till I can get back at you(ha).

No sweat...the NEA and teachers...like any other group of people have good members..and some goofball members....this whole main thing was caused by indivual teachers...who crossed the line...they were wrong....just like someone useing a gun to commit a crime....that person is NOT all gun owners...and all gun owners are not criminals....same with teachers..some good some bad.

Doglips: You couldn't be more accurate in what you wrote.

Oh by the way...regarding you comments about why so many public school students enter the military...that's really an intersting phenomenon. What's your opinion on why that's happening?

Seems to me it has something to do with economics. My theory is that well to do famiies are more likely to send their kids to private schools/colleges and move on into professions.

Whereas, students not from well to do families are relegated to "free" public education and then have visions of the military offering them a form of higher education or at least a chance to get their education at Uncle Sam's expense.

Of course, plenty of exception occur to the above two scenario's.

As a Recruiter I generaly got most bodies from public schools...and even then from the less economicly prosperous area....lets face it kids comeing from upper middle class plan to go to colledge....poorer familes dont have the resources to send kids off for 4 yrs to colledge....some may attend community colledge then state schools but most simply enter the work force....compared to McDonalds the Milatary is a great option...same with the officer corps...not many harvard grads leading an infentry pltoon.

Exclamation

Exactly my situation too - public school education, followed by military service to secure the benefits for further education. Now I'm pounding out code for the Florida Dept. of Education. We have all manner of people in our system, from the far right to the far left - but with the Liberals predominating in Government and media, it seems they get most of the press. I took the joke as it was intended - that some naive Liberal educators are out of touch with reality as well as their students.
My favorite teacher in High School was a Vietnam War Huey pilot - shot down four times! He was a good one.
