| DARWIN Three men injured after bag of gas explodes at Largo home
Posted Tuesday, July 6, 2004 08:19 AM EDT Three men injured after bag of gas explodes at Largo home LARGO, Fla. - A homemade explosive shattered the windows of a house, shredded part of its fence and left three men injured, police said. Nick Pennucci, 33, Jerome Lowe, 25, and Kent Schulze, 25, were filling plastic garbage bags with acetylene and oxygen from gas tanks in the side yard of Pennucci's home, then lighting the bags on fire with cigarettes or a grill lighter, Largo police said. "They weren't real clear on what they were doing," said Largo detective Sgt. Melanie Holley. The first gas-filled bag made a loud booming noise, but when the second bag exploded, it damaged the homes of Pennucci and a neighbor, and left all three men with cuts and burns late Sunday. They were treated at hospitals and released, officials said. "They were very lucky based on the damage to the houses," Holley said. Holley said officials were deciding whether the men will be charged with detonation of a destructive device, a felony. Largo is in the Tampa Bay area. |

That's what old welders do for entertainment. I can assure that even a small amount of oxygen and acetylene mixed together will create a large "BOOM!":jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: ...and a trashbag full would blow up a building.

I'd need to read the NFA a bit more closely to see if gas counts even if it is over 1/4 ounce.

Lighting the bags with a cigarette lighter...DUH!!!! Many years ago I learned from some welders how to make a big bang. Not real destructive unless you are too close. A one gallon plastic milk jug with oxy/acetylene makes for one loud boom with a pretty good shock wave. I wouldnt even think of making anything like that today. |

Surprised they weren't welding a gas tank.

:ballons: oxy/acetylene makes a good pesticide for use on ants al-qaeda style. They dont come back. Just don't stand on top of the colony when you light the gas in the little hole in the ground. :ballons:

Advice for the day: Don't allow any doctor who's smoking and holding an oxy/acetylene hose to give you a rectal examination. :insane: :jaw:

Some time ago I heard of a couple of guys doing this with a great big yard trash bag full of neutral mix oxy acetylene fused with a length of toilet paper. They set it off at the edge of some woods near a subdivision. It stripped the leaves completely off of nearby trees. Shook up the residents of the neighborhood, but did no damage. The experimenters weren't caught, though the cops came out for a look. They decided it wasn't a great idea.

A welding buddy of mine did the ants Al-Qaeda style once. He put the nozzle in the ground and just let it fill up all the tunnels and holes before he lit it. One heck of a bang but that wasnt the worst part. In just a few minutes fires were starting up everywhere. Seems that all the plants roots caught fire and came to the surface. The whole crew of 8-10 was busy putting out fires. He came real close to losing his job on that one! He was a union boilermaker too so he should have known better. |
