Man Sent To Hospital After Firework Explodes Inside Car

A young man is in the burn unit at the University Medical Center after setting off a firework in his friend's car. The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office says 24-year-old Adam Weber and Jared Williams were driving down 13th East when they lit a large illegal mortar rocket.

They apparently intended to throw it out the window, but police say Weber forgot to roll his window down. When he tossed it, the firework bounced back into his lap and exploded. He was taken to the hospital with second and third degree burns on his arms, legs and torso.

Sgt. John Barker, Salt Lake Co. Sheriff's Office: "HE'S GONNA BE IN A LOT OF PAIN. I DON'T THINK IT'S LIFE-THREATENING, BUT HE'S GONNA HAVE A HARD TIME, IT'S GONNA BE A LONG PROCESS TO GET HIM HEALED UP."

Williams sustained a minor burn on his back. Officers say it appears alcohol was a factor. So far, no charges have been filed.
