| Senior Member | the marine and the french lady The train was quite crowded, so the U. S. Marine walked the entire length looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a well-dressed, middle-aged, French woman's poodle. The war-weary Marine asked, "Ma'am, may I have that seat?" The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular,"Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat." The Marine walked the entire train again, but the only seat left was under that dog. "Please, ma'am. May I sit down? I'm very tired." She snorted, "Not only are you Americans rude, you are also arrogant!" This time the Marine didn't say a word, he just picked up the little dog, tossed it out the train window, and sat down. The woman shrieked, "Someone must defend my honor! Put this American in his place!" An English gentleman sitting nearby spoke up, "Sir, you Americans seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You hold the fork in the wrong hand. You drive your autos on the wrong side of the road. And now, sir, you've thrown the wrong !!!!! out the window!"

| Senior Member | lol according to my French teacher (from Paris), they call that American kissing in France Let's see. She's told our class that American media is very conservative. I almost rolled on the floor laughing. Mind you I go to the most conservative school in the nation, so we don't take well to liberalism here.

| Super Moderator ![]() | We had a guest speaker from France who was very well humored and talked about the Franco-American history of primarily cooperation but with its share of conflicts. He was frankly (pun intended) very good and made it clear that France's recent position is pretty stinking complicated and that quite a few people in France prefer that they had gotten involved in Iraq on our side. He also acknowledged that certain French officials had been found to have been bribed into a pro-Iraq position and are now being held accountable. And a woman who I'm pretty sure was this French teacher SRX described mouthed off against the US when he was taking questions. A Frenchman visited and spoke and our French prof was the one mouthing off against the US. And it was HE who tempered the wrath and moved on to rational subjects.

| Super Moderator ![]() ![]() | So...do you two at least hold hands in class? I noticed that SRX avoided a direct answer to my question above...but I didn't really expect one. ![]()

Oxford, how hard is it to get by in France with no knowledge of spoken French (I can read signs but thats about it). Also, I've heard that them Frenchies don't work out - how hard is it to find a gym in a mid-sized city ? | |

| Super Moderator ![]() ![]() | gunssb...here's what I found after being in and around Nice for ten days. We stayed in a Villa about 20 miles NW of Nice. First...many business people speak both English and French. That's good for their business. You can get by without speaking French with a little creativity...such as hands and facial expressions. It's a good idea, though, to get a pocket size French/English translation pamplet to carry with you at all times. Service people, though, gave me the impression that they could not care less about serving tourists, especially Americans. They're not shy about hollering insults, either. Re: a gym to work out...I didn't have time for that. Plus, I was walking around streets of quaint old villages up and down mountain sides every day. That proved plenty of exercise for me...plus swimming (with my suit on) at the villa every night....well, except for one time.(ha) Gunssb...I didn't notice discrimination because of the color of one's skin. Hey...as Americans we were equally discriminated against by some of their superior acting locals. That was easy to ignore because they wanted our hard earned dollars...so they did just enough discriminiating to tick us off but not enough to keep us from buying their junk. I was there with my wife as we visited a longtime buddy of mine who is a professor at Michigan State University. He headed up a graduate education seminar, for graduate credit, each summer in Valboone, France, which is a small village outside Nice. He was nice enough to invite my wife and I to share his villa. His wife toured us around that area during those 10 days. There were some really interesting historical sites such as one AquaDuct which still stands that the Romans built centuries ago. And...there were numerous ancient castles which we toured. As for shopping...my wife and our friend's wife shopped while I found a shady bench and drank wine. I liked that much better than shopping. From there we drove over to Monoco and put some change in their slot machines. That's one expensive looking place. We got out of there fast. But...the beaches around Nice and all along the French Riveria were something you'll never forget. Not much sand was there...mostly small round pebbles about 1" in diameter. Couldn't believe how those tourists and locals layed out there on the rocks, many without wearing clothes. Had to go take a look at the water for myself with my darkest sunglasses covering my glaring eyes. Nuff Said. Ox

My impression is that Europe is actually quite accepting of other races, but the examples I'm aware of are east Indian and Arabic. Not sure how they are towards those of African or Native American descent.
