Sounds familiar. Except that my wife's little dogs always seemed to skip the first nine rules, and go directly to nr 10.

My wife and I promised each other that we would not feed our dogs table scraps from the table while we are having dinner. The dogs would have their dinner while we had our's and following dinner they usually went outside and took their dump and came back in and took a snooze. This one night we were having steak and my wife couldn't resist the temtation of giving them a few pieces of meat from the table. Well... from that day on when we had our dinner, they were right there under the table looking up at us for some more table scraps and they would't touch their dinner until they got some scraps and when they figured we were done eating, then and only then would they go and eat their dog food.

And had well-bahaved, mostly sane dogs. Then I got married, and wound up with a houseful: wife, son, stepson, and various foster children (mostly teen-aged girls). I haven't had a properly-behaved dog since.

The wife's living at her mother's house now along with the stepson, and the foster kids are all raised and gone. So the beagles are pretty much my last hope, and they're about as hardheaded as a dog can be. I'll count myself lucky if they just become good little hunters.
