54 of 88 for me. The whole illegal immigration issue annoys me. I have no problem at all with legal immigrants; America IS a nation of immigrants. Even the Native Americans (aka American Indians) originally come here from somewhere else, if you go far enough back in prehistory. Immigrants came here, learned the knowledge required to become a US Citizen, completed their residency, went before a judge to be examined, passed the exam, and took the oath of citizensip, and that was that. They came to become Americans. They came to stay. It's the illegals that come here solely with the intention of making money and sending it home, and/or the ones who get here and discover they want to become Americans but don't want to play by the rules, that frost my cookies. The rules aren't hard to play by. Going the illegal route says something about the illegals' character that is in my opinion antithecal to what we look for as being part of the American culture. And while we are on the subject: if you want to be here, learn to speak English! At least, speak English when you are outside your home and dealing with any agency of the gocernment at any level, including schools. When you're at home, you can speak whatever you like; Latin, Spanish, Chinese, Esperanto, Swahili, Hebrew, Klingon, I don't care. But outside the home, speak English. We seriously need an Consitutional amendment declaring Standard English to be the official language of the United States, for the sake of cultural unity. Law and language are the warp threads of the national tapestry, the things the pretty weft threads that make the pattern are tied to. Wefts like Italian food, Mexican holdiays, Irish holidays, German beers, ethnic pride days and all the rest are all very nice - but without the warps of the English language and the traditions of English Common Law that are the foundation of our legal system, the whole tapestry falls apart into a jumble of meaningless fibers. The illegals from the Spanish-speaking countries to our south are doing their best to cut those sturdy warp threads. Their activities, and they themselves, must be stopped. If you want to have a United States to hand on to your children rather than a bunch of regions that pay lip service to the Consitutuion while doing their best to dissolve the Union into several de facto mini-nations, I urge you to work for passage of Official English laws at every level. it is a battle this country cannot afford to lose. |
