They told me I was packing heat.

Don't do things like that. I almost snorted my beer. And I need to drink it, not breathe it, if I'm going to get any sleep before I go to work tonight...

Ha-ha

but this is symbolic of the kinds of problems driving people away from flying and it is not just the price of tickets due to fuel costs.

Things have gotten to the point where it's just about cheaper to get your private pilot's license, buy a small private plane, and just go where you want to go, when you want to go. For any trip under about 1500 air miles, it is faster than a scheduled airline. What you lose in airspeed with a private plane, you make up for in time saved by not having to report to the airport 4 hours before your flight to go through security, and then wait on the ground until the tower finally lets you taxi, and then wait some more in the queue until the tower lets you take off.

Before 9/11, Flying Magazine did a study based on a single engine private prop job flying at 140 knots vs a scheduled airline flight, to Miami I think it was. The pilot and the airline passenger left the house at the same time. Passenger flew between major airports, pilot flew between general aviation airports that cater to light planes and business jets. Long story short: the pilot was sitting by the pool sipping his second dirnk and eyeing the cuties in bikinis when the passenger finally arrived at the hotel. With the additional security checks required today and the airports a bigger clusterbleep than ever, I think the private pilot would have time to pick up one of the bikini clad cuties and head off to eat before the passenger got there!
