| 15-Year-Old Boy Steals, Crashes, Broward Sheriff Cruiser The Associated Press Published: Nov 11, 2002 FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A 15-year-old handcuffed in the back of a patrol car crawled into the driver's seat and took the car on a 10-minute joyride Monday before crashing, causing collisions that injured three others, officials said. Herbert Marlin Johnson was treated at Broward General Medical Center and released into deputies' custody. The crash in Lauderdale Lakes caused at least two collisions, injuring three other people. Two women and a man were taken to local hospitals, but their injuries weren't considered life-threatening, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Department. It all started when deputies responding to a burglary call at Tamarac's Community Health Center arrested Johnson after a three-minute foot chase. He was handcuffed and placed in the back of the cruiser. Deputies say they don't know how Johnson moved his restrained hands from behind his back to in front of his body. He pried open the partition separating the back and front seats of the patrol car, climbed into the driver's seat and took off. Johnson drove through the Fort Lauderdale suburbs of Tamarac, Oakland and Lauderdale Lakes before crashing, deputies said. The sheriff's office is still investigating and it wasn't immediately known what charges were pending against Johnson.
