A science fiction fandom term. A filksong is a song with a melody you've lifted from somewhere, usually popular music, and then put new lyrics to pertaining to some other subject, usually totally unrelated to the original. The term emerged in fandom with the rise of popular folksingers in the late 1950s and early 1960s (e.g., Pete Seegar, The Kingston Trio, Peter Paul & Mary). Fans who performed in that style became known as filksingers due to a typo in a World Science Fiction Convention program in the early 1960s. The term stuck and has come to describe any song that meets the specifications I gave. As enjoying science fiction and fantasy become more acceptable to mainstream America (remember that C&W song about "being country when country wasn't cool?"), the term is percolating into the mainstream's consciousness.
