| Police: Drunk Golf Cart Driver Tried To Flee From Officers POSTED: 9:26 a.m. EST January 31, 2003 UPDATED: 11:30 a.m. EST January 31, 2003 DELAND, Fla. -- David Johnson has been convicted of driving drunk before. But this time, police say, he was drunk behind the wheel of a golf cart. A police officer on patrol spotted Johnson driving a golf cart down State Road 44 Wednesday night and pulled him over, said DeLand police spokeswoman Barbara West. According to the police report, the officer noticed signs Johnson had been drinking: the smell of alcohol on Johnson's breath, slurred speech and a beer can in the golf cart cupholder. The officer called for backup and asked Johnson to take a field sobriety test. That's when, police say, Johnson refused, cursed at the officers and sped off in the cart. The officers chased on foot, attempting at one point to stop Johnson by shooting him with a stun gun, but his leather jacket blocked the shots. An officer managed to catch up with Johnson and wrestled him to a stop. "It's kind of rare," West said. "I don't remember anything like this happening before." Johnson was charged with drunken driving, fleeing, eluding and resisting arrest with violence. He was being held Thursday at the Branch Jail in Daytona Beach on $3,000 bail. Police said he has been convicted several times of drunken driving, among other crimes. Copyright 2003 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. | Bad form - he didn't ask to "play through"! We're plagued by those silly powered wheel chairs up here. On sidewalks - no problem. But on the highway during 5:00 rush hour?! Guess the old boy thought he was back in his car ten years before.
