Obscene phone caller rings up chief of police

By ABCNEWS.com
February 3, 2003 (Cleveland, OH) — Sometimes people's sexual hang-ups get them in trouble. But it was not hanging up that caused problems for John Mullen Jr.
When Mullen decided to make a dirty call, police say, he apparently dialed the wrong number. Mullen reached the home of Westlake Police Department's Chief of Police, Richard Walling.

"The gentleman was saying all these sexually explicit things he would like to do to the chief," said Lt. Ray Arcuri.

The chief listened patiently and used another phone line to call the dispatcher at the police station to see if the phone company could trace the call.

Mullen talked for about 20 minutes, and then apparently fell asleep with the phone still off the hook, Arcuri said.

"The chief could hear the guy rhythmically breathing like he was sleeping."

Police traced the call to Mullen's home, and the 31-year-old's roommates allowed police to enter, Arcuri said. They found the caller sound asleep.

"He was still holding the phone," Arcuri said. "One of the officers picked up the phone and said, 'Hey chief, is that you?'"

Mullen pleaded not guilty last week to charges of making harassing phone calls stemming from the Jan. 14 incident.

Police believe Mullen had been out drinking and was dialing numbers randomly when he got on the line with Walling.
