Need help With Squirrel Dog Training

I Have an eight month old Beagle cross and am interested in making him into my Squirrel dog. The problem with that is that I have no idea how to train one.

I would appreciate it if someone could post some step by step instructions or a link to a good guide.

Thanks

Hi big poppa, If you have a hunting hounds club in your area that would be the best bet , just go hang with them and learn the tricks of the trade, if not , a system that I used with some red bone coon hounds I ran years ago was to get hold of some squirrel scent (can be had at trappers supply sources) or you can just go shoot one . what ever you do to get the scent just go for a walk and drag it behind you as you walk , then take your puppy (on leash) for a walk and let him pick up the scent, it helps if you show excitment when he finds the scent and reward him when he runs the trail you left. keep working with him buy hanging the scent in trees and befor you know it you will have a good little hunting dog.

My Boykin spaniel just seems to want to catch the squirell. He trees, and stays there till I pull him off, and he does the classic hound standing with two paws on the tree barking poose, chaseing the squirell around the tree. I haven't trained him to do it, but we have an abundance of squirells in our area. When he first showed interest in squirels I would say go get em, and run with him to the tree that squirel went up.
Before I knew it, he would see the squirells first some times, and off we would go. Now this could be considered harrassing wildlife, so becareful where and when you do it. I do it here on my own property, basically in my own yard. I also have never let him catch one, though my cats have brought back a few, though only small ones.
Good luck with the dog, and good luck with the squirels.
