New...Sort Of

I've been a member for a while, but I've been away for a while. I'm working on a book, and I'm here for my own "know how" as well as book research.

Thank you all. My experience with firearms is unfortunately limited to hunting/shooting trips as a kid (mostly with a bow, though also with a .410 break-action shotgun, .30-06 bolt-action rifle, .308 lever-action rifle, .357 Magnum revolver, .22 revolver, .22 Marlin rifle, 20-gauge pump-action shotgun, and 12-gauge pump-action shotgun).

I'm looking to start purchasing guns for my own collection, and I'm also interested in home defense (I may look at getting a CCW later on if I feel it's prudent). I like what I've heard about the S&W M&P .357 SIG, but I don't have any personal experience with it.

As a writer, I'm always interested in learning anything I can about firearms, since I tend to write science fiction that's set in the near future and usually has a militaristic bend to it.
