I've been a member of quite a few forums of differing interests on the web, but I've got to say this is the absolute BEST and friendliest forum I've ever joined. Now if our webmeister will just allow me to change my username... I've used the same user name on a dozen different forums, but somehow the username field on this one is one character shorter than others. My usual "TheWanderingMind" became "TheWanderingMin." Whatabummer! Were I a Chinese named Min, I'd be tickled pink! Of course, maybe the "d" just wandered off... ![]() I have had a deep and abiding love for firearms all my life, especially the bolt actions of the early 1900s. During my early military career, I was assigned as an additional-duty small arms instructor, and even shot competitively in some interservice matches. I did offhand matches, even though I drove our chief instructor crazy -- My left eye was my stronger eye, even though I'm a right-hander. So, shooting in the classic offhand position, I tilted my head back and used my left eye to sight! Drove our boss to distraction, even though it worked for me and I won a couple of matches...Then, during a period of personal financial crisis and alcoholic excess 36 years ago, when I was totally gunless, I married an antigunner... But now, there's hope on the horizon! She told me the other day we needed a gun around the house (after the wind tore apart a portion of our privacy fence). (We've had "visitors" in the night through the missing portion of fence, although not into the house, thank goodness...) So, with the help of the Good Lord and that tax incentive rebate, I'm going to return to the ranks of gun ownership!I have thoroughly enjoyed everything I've read so far in this forum. The expertise available is awesome, and the friendly attitude is even better! So, while waiting with bated breath for my first civilian ownership of a gun, I've added some subscriptions and browsed myself to death! Thanks for making me feel so welcome, everyone! |

Jest wurfless!God, do I miss my old Ballester-Molina! Bought it for a-dollar-a-caliber from the first sergeant of one of our maintenance squadrons when I was in the Air Commandos in Florida. His name was SMSgt Forrest G. Tilton, and at the time, he owned the second largest Luger collection in the United States. He used to smuggle guns back from Southeast Asia aboard Air Force C-123 Provider transports. You never found a C-123 on a long over-water flight without a 55-gallon drum or two of engine oil on board. One usually was his, with only six inches of oil on top. My roomie and I bought a thousand rounds of .45 ACP from him, but we had to sit and wipe down each round before we could go out and shoot! ![]() Of course, he wouldn't part with a Luger, so we settled for the B-M, a Norwegian .45 ACP and a Browning High-Power... And, to think I could have had a "Swedish K" for only $125... Or a VC Tokarev, or an SKS, or... The opportunities we miss when we're young.... | |
