I currently own a 7.7 jap rifle. My dad brought it home from the Phillipines when he was in the Army. They gave him a choice of either a large sword or a rifle. It came in a wooden box. When I was very young I can remember it being in the closet. Many years later, my cousin assembled the rifle. We didn't know what it was until I was about 24 years old. I took it to a gunsmith and we found out what it was. I bought 2 boxes of ammo. Took it home and fired it for the first time. I've taken it on deer hunting trips and have bagged two deer with. I was using Norma 180 gr ammo. I have been trying to get some more ammo for it. The rifle is very accurate. I also have a bayonet with mine. My dad passed away in 1985 and I plan to keep the rifle in the family.

welcome to the site.

Great story. Keep the rifle in the family always

Do you have pictures? It's rare for a lot of Americans to gave and shoot Japanese guns.

I also own other guns as well. A Bersa personal carry .380 semi. Plus a 500 model Mossberg pump shotgun. Don't do a lot of hunting anymore.

I own a 7.7 and a 6.5 arisaka. You can get ammo from Graf & sons. Norma is pretty expensive. I worked up loads for both and they will take a lot of pressure.Take a close look at the numbers on the reciever. There's a good chance the value of gun is high since it came from the battlefield. Does it still have the mum( flower on top of the reciever). They were usually ground off upon surrender. Good luck with it .nam72 out.

Hello handyman. I've got a Ariska 6.5 my dad brought home from the second world war. I also have the bayonet. He got it while stationed in the CBI theater of operations. China, Burma, India. I also have a Ghurka fighting knife, in it's original scabbard with two sharpening knives. He had a full auto machine gun but of course wasn't allowed to bring that back home..And welcome to the forum..

Yes, the mum is still on my rifle along with the serial number. I've never known what this symbol was or what to call it before.

My mum is also still on the barrel. Nice shooter. Mine also has the noisy bolt cover which was in almost all cases tossed because of the noise it created while being operated.

If you can take a picture of the receiver bridge with the markings we can read what mod it is.

Smile great deer rifle

I bought this 99 last year for $102, the stock was cut down so it wasn't a collector peice. The main problem they seam to have is a hard triger pull, I put a very small and slight bevel on the sear with a dremmel tool then polished it good, now it's about 2 lbs. and nice and smooth. After that things got out of hand , I added a scope removed the iron sights cut and recrowned the barrel took all the scratches out of the barrel and re-blued it ( cold blueing ) reworked the bolt because of the scope, with all that it looked pretty good except for the old stock so I got a piece of walnut and went to work, when I finished it I bedded the action and floated the barrel. It shoots a 1 in. gropup at 100 yds. I'd be proud to carry into any hunt camp.

Ammo is no problem if you reload, can reload 8mm Mauser brass by just resizeing the neck and it shoots fine. I load Sierra hpbt 174 gr. with IMR 3031 40 grs. It's a lot cheaper than Norma.
