Buck Disappointment

Just picked up a supposedly "assisted open" Buck folder as a replacement to my lost Kershaw. What a piece of trash. The Kershaw opened reliably every time and didn't need excessive pressure on the flip part to open.
The Buck, on the other hand, opens about halfway from a flip of the switch and even with a hard press won't open all the way. I didn't buy an assisted open knife to have to manually open it.

Did I get a lemon, or has Buck's quality really dropped? I've always used Bucks as hunting and dressing knives, but I'll sure think twice about ever buying another.

Re buck knife

I would send back regardless for refund. Was this a hunting knife. I have a Sog Trident but it is more for defense than skinning of game. I can attest to its out of box sharpness and reliability. Just thought I would suggest this.

Have you contacted Buck? That would be the place to start.

This was more of a defensive/work pocketknife. More for cutting boxes and general light work and possible self defense than anything else. I'm definitely returning it for store credit so I can just buy a Kershaw.

I used to swear by kershaw, I now carry the SOG trident just has more blade and IMO better edge retention, opens all the way everytime and locks tight, plus gives me a hand filling handle for a secure grip. I wasn't sure about the handle at first due to it's light weight, but I love it now. I think it's infinitely better than kershaws and They ain't bad. Just my $.02

GOOD LORD!! Box cutters are for cutting boxes, a pocket/sheath knife is an extension of your arm. My Sicilian-ness cringed when I read this. I've removed from posession of my wife, pocket knives, for cutting boxes and/or paper objects. Shame, shame, shame!!!

I have to disagree. I will never give up my USA made Kershaw; for a China made SOG. You know the old saying you get what you pay for. Stay away frome the Chinese made blade period.

Some time stuff happens to the best of anything....including Buck Knives.

I use The Buck 110 for my all purpose knife. Course you have to manually open that one.

Most of my folders are manual openers with flippers, as I just couldn't find a Kershaw AO that I liked. However, I did recently buy a Kershaw RJI that is my favorite AO knife by far. At around the same time, I decided to get a couple of manual folders - a SOG Recon 1 tanto and a Gerber Armor - to cure my tanto addiction. The SOG isn't my favorite since it only has thumb studs, but it's a good knife regardless. The Gerber, on the other hand, is pretty bad considering the $30ish price tag. The blade isn't centered, so I have to choose between it being stiff to open and close, or scraping against the interior liner. I have an $8 M-Tech that is far superior to the Gerber.

I've had good luck with imported Kershaw and CRKT folders, as well as a couple of others I've picked up over time, but I think I'll limit any future Gerber purchases to USA fixed blades. My only Buck knives are USA fixed blades already, so I guess there's no need to encourage their Chinese operations.

SOG isn't a Chinese Company, it's a US owned company, all it multi-tools and assisted opening knive, like the Trident, are made here in the USA. Their fixed blades are contracted out to Taiwan, I believe. All the "economy" (read crap) gear is only stuff made in china.
