I think i have addressed this before on another thread but ill give my opinion again. The american "tanto" crazy was started by cold steel is the 80`s as a marketing ploy which worked very well for them. New strange clip and some rope cutting parlor tricks and a fad was born. Ill also like to add that tanto is not a style but a japanese name literaly meaning small knife. And that tip as its refered to tonto was never even on a real tanto but on certain bladesmith schools swords(Waks and Tachi).
That all being said a drop point is made for utility purposes mainly skinning and cutting, There is more USEABLE edge on a drop point then an american tanto clip it tends to have more ergomonic cutting as well. It may not be and new and cool as grandpa`s old drop point but my guess is grandpa new what worked and what didnt.

Stick with a proven, traditional style...dagger or bowie for fighting, puukko or drop point for work, etc.

I don't care much for the Tanto. I like the spear points and I like Beanchmade knives.

thanks guys. i was worried about the tantos ability in a utility role. ill stick with the drop points. and i agree joe, i have owned and unfortunately lost a few cold steel's and they were extremely good knives! the only items i have from them now are a true flight thrower and their shovel. and truth be told,if i knew how good they were before i bought them id have paid triple the price and still been thrilled! especially the shovel!
