| buying a new pocket knive I need a new pocket knife (as my wife lost my swiss army.) I went to Ka-bar's web site and liked the Mule or the FIN line, however they are made in Taiwan. I would like to buy american if possible. Can anyone suggest a American made knive similar in style to the Ka-bar mule? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

| WOW, good luck. I only say that as there are sooooo many to choose from anymore. A lot of junk and a lot middle of the road and a lot high end. MHO of course. Ask yourself what features you're wanting. Do you want a multi-function knife again, seeing as you mention Swiss Army? Or do you want a "traditional" pocket knife? Do you want a serrated blade or half serrated? Take a look at some of the Kershaw line to start with. Kershaw Knives | Ken Onion Knives | Pocket Knives and More from The Kershaw Store.com Or if you prefer the Spryderco they speak of, here are some to choose from. http://www.spyderco.com/

| Thanks to all for the feedback. I went to my local Walmart today, they had a small selection of knives, the best one they carried was a low end gerber. I passed on that. I found a Ka-Bar Mule for $45 w/shipping, as I don't want to spend more than $50, any opinions on whether this is a quality knife for the money? Thanks, JB If you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance for survival. | Senior Member | I love Spyderco knives, but have been under the impression for a while now that they were far more expensive than they are! What a bunch of cool knives! Some are definitely in the price range that I can't afford, but there are many more affordable knives on their website too that look great! This one in particular is something I have never seen before. A new kind of multi-tool. Not sure if I would like it or not. Byrdrench Here is another one that I like that would be nice to have to just toss in a pocket and go. Flatbyrd The whole "byrd" line seems to be pretty nice and very affordable too. Anybody on here have experience with any of the "byrd" line from Spyderco? I may just have to have my wife get me one for my first Father's day here Sunday!

| Right now a Taiwan copy of the Micro-tech Scarab for $10.00,works like a champ, but not the quality of the real thing, and I bought three of them for gifts, the other two were trash, unusuable. ![]() P/S,The Scarab is an out the front, double action automatic knife. A slide switch on the top ridge allows you to extend and retract the blade automaticly by slideing the switch.

This is fine if you don't care about buying American made. Kershaw and Smith&Wesson are both made in China. Last edited by livebythegun; 06-13-2008 at 03:26 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost | |

| You knife guys are going to laugh, but I dressed out my deer last year with a $7 Big-5 "Winchester" folder, made in China of course. The knife took a nice edge, and was still sharp at the end of the process. The only thing I don't like is the partially serrated edge, which is a gimmick and has no place on a hunting knife. For American made knives, you can't beat Spyderco for value. When I was flying in the Air Force and felt I needed a "survival" knife, I carried at various times a Gerber Mark II, an Ek Commando, or a Randall. They are all American-made, and a little pricey, but not as pricey as real "custom" knives. I hear Gerber's quality has slipped a little, and you may wait a year for an Ek or four to five years for a Randall. All are too big for game dressing tasks, but they make great camp knives. My default folder for 35 years has been a Buck, and I have had no complaints. The new ones still seem like nice quality, and the price is right. Schrade and Camillus are old American brands. I have owned them and they are nice. I heard Schrade is out of business.

If you order on from the internet, you might consider getting a couple of ectras, just in case one is cursed,if you get one at a gun show fire it maybe fifty times to make sure it is the one. I got three at as gun show with out trying, two were junk, the one I speak of has been fired at least a couple of thousand time, keeps on doing it's thing, extremly save design and lots of fun. Had a single action No name halo design go off in my pocket yesterday, didn't even know it until I pulled my hand back out of my pocket a bit bloodied.grrrrr, I will have an invention comeing out on the market soon that will eliminate that problem,(can't be too soon to suit me.) There is also a Chinese Scarab knockoff that fires harder, but they run about $40.00. ![]() The Chinese one has a gray switch, the Taiwan has a black switch, they are both called "Lightening."
