It's not surplus, but check back regularly at these two places:
8mm Mauser Ammunition To Go Plus, go to gunbroker.com and put "8mm" in the search function. Lots of both rifles and ammo lots come up.

New toy arrived yesterday, I dont have any pics but here is where I got it.
GunBroker.com guns: Egyptian Hakim 7.9mm Semi Auto Rifle (item: 76377408 ends: Jul-26-07 01:58:16 PM) I am thinking of refinishing the stock, it has a hard lacquer finish that is flaking off and has a few gouges. I know some people think it ruins the nostalgic value, so tell me what ou think ? should I, should'nt I , if I do how should I do it, I'm thinkng just getting the lacquer off and then mabey some linseed oil.. ![]()

You can get the Birchwood Casey stock refinishing kit...and is it a real collectors' piece that you would want to keep it in it's original condition? If not, I personally would refinish it. But don't blame me if you regret it later!

Inter-Ordnance had a pretty good deal on Romanian 8mm but I don't know if they still do. Try www.interordnance.com . Congrats on the new toy, and do whatever you want to as far as refinishing it-you paid for it! I understand your dilemma though-I go through it everytime I buy a new gun.

Guy's thanks for all the input. AH: it is Egyptian, but is based on the swedish M42B since Egypt had purchased the manufacturing equipment from the swedes in the 1950's. for 2 years they also made a 7.62x39 version called the Raschid, some people call it the Rasheed, these I hear are very rare, I have searched several places and never found one for sale.

well I decided to go ahead and remove that horrible lacquer, so I just gave it a light sanding, still shows history, but I like the color and grain better, and holy cosmoline, I stripped it and put all the parts in a bucket of mineral oil and got to scrubbing, then cleaned with normal gun cleaner and oil, tell me what you think?
here is before: http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...3075557671.jpg http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...3075557718.jpg http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...3075557812.jpg and after: http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...ne/GUNS008.jpg http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...ne/GUNS010.jpg http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...ne/GUNS009.jpg http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...ne/GUNS011.jpg p.s. It looks very nice. Next time you can fix that shellaqued finish with denatured alcohol. It will actually blend those flakes and chips right back in. Works great on those Russian rifles.
Now you know just why I d not have a C&R license. |
