I just finished cleaning up the mags I bought from the CMP. This was an education. I didn't realize how different one mag could be from another.
Cleaning them was kind of a pain, but I really learned how the mags are put together and how they work. I followed the disassembly instructions I got on the forums here. I pried up the round end of the floor plate with a knife blade to raise the detente paste the edge of the bottom of the mag. Then I put a tiny screwdriver blade into the detente to push it past the edge. Then I pushed it the rest of the way off from the square end with the screwdriver.
These puppies were really gunked up with cosmoline. After I took them apart I scrubbed the parts in very hot soapy water and picked at all the crevices to get the cosmo out. I rinsed the parts off in very hot water. Then I dried off the parts and let them sit to air dry. Then I lubed each mag and assembled it and made sure the follower could compress the spring as if the mag was fully loaded.
During all parts of the process I checked for form, fit, and function, as well as for rust, wear and tear, and corrosion. There wasn't a lot of rust that I had to remove. I ended up throwing out one mag body because the bottom where the floor plate is seated was all roughed up and rounded off and unfit for use, and the body had quite a bit of rust. That floor plate was all twisted up, so I tossed it, too. I kept the follower (which is a little scuffed up) and the mag spring.
All the mags were blued except for one, which was parked. That Parkerized mag was by far the best of the bunch. I wish all of them were in that good of condition.
It stinks that I had to trash one of the mags, but I guess eleven good ones out of twelve is not too bad.
Not a hard job but sure can be time comsuming. Been there, done that. I'm sure you had fun, though. lol BTW, you can get magazine rebuild kits from Numerich. I believe there's everything but the body.
