| M1 carbine Rock-ola
I recently traded for a Rock-ola 1,7xx,xxx carbine. Has Rock-ola receiver and barrel, and a mis-match of other USGI parts (Winchester flat bolt and butt plate, Standard handguard, lot of Inland parts). Has a miniscule import stamp on the bottom of the barrel. Is this worth fixing up (all Rock-ola) or just keep as a shooter. Thanks

Rock-Ola carbines are expensive to restore. The big question is about the rear sight. First, does it have an adjustable sight? The original configuration used a flip type rear sight. Second, if it has an adjustable, does it have round craters where the sight was staked in position? If the craters are there, then keep it as a shooter. If there are no round craters then restore it. Early stake marks were like chisel marks. The adjustable sight staking was done with a punch.

It has the adjustable rear sight, but it looks as though it was slid into place. I see no punch marks. (I assume they would be on top of the receiver near the sight?) I have purchased an original Rock-ola rear sight. How difficult will that be to replace? Thanks for the info.

To remove /replace a rear sight is fairly easy and straight forward. I normally clamp the receiver in a padded vise. The sight is driven out left to right. The new sight goes in right to left. The flip sight has an S marked on the side. This is the "S"mall side. It goes in first. To drive the sights in and out I recommend using a hardwood dowel and a medium weight hammer. If the sight is so tight that the dowel fails then I switch to a brass drift. Sometimes the sights are very tight so use a bit od patience and you may also need to use a fair amount of force. When putting the new sight in, be sure you align it carefully. a very little bit of grease on the grooves and dovetail will help.
