| Which Stock to buy? Hello everyone, I just acquired from my brother a Winchester M1 carbine, serial number 5572xxx. His has had this for over thirty years and I wish he had kept it in its original condition. When he first got the gun he sanded the stock down, checkered part of the stock at the pistol grip and handgrip, and then checkered those locations only on it’s right side. He also took all the metal parts that were exposed “blued” them. Well now in my possession and I assume I don't have any kind of an antique, so it looks like it's going to be a “shooter”. The stock looks nice and pretty but I want to bring it back somewhat to its original military style. I've been checking on the Internet for M1 carbine Winchester stock sets. I found one on Ebay, a universal M1 carbine commercial hardwood stock. I have no idea whether my hardware will fit into any blank stock. There are also descriptions that say, "was a high wood that was cut down to a low wood stock” and "Winchester flat form and kicker pistol grip area ". This description also says that the head guard is a "for rivet "and that on my weapon is a two rivet. Are both these guards interchangeable? I also founded “Bob’s” gun shop on the Internet and they have a number of M1 carbine stocks that range between Military new walnut stocks and commercial oil finished sporter’s. There also seems to be available some good use military stocks; I just don't know what to look in a stock. Your comments and suggestions are needed, Thank you in advance Ron |
