Question i need some help

I was just given an m1 carbine with a receiver made by universal I wanted to know how I can tell if I am risking my life every time me or my wife pull the trigger or if mine is a safe model as in if I can id quality by my guns serial number or if universal is a code word for throw me in a fire so if you can lend me a hand I would greatly appreciate it also I would like to know if this is the mil spec version

If it is a single recoil spring model, it is probably ok. If it is a twin recoil spring model, then you've got a bad one.
