Plainfield Feeding Issues

I know that feeding soft point ammo is a problem for the Plainfield M1 Carbine, but do any of you know of a way that might improve it?

I'm not expecting there to be any solution but to use FMJ ammo, but I'd like to make it able to feed soft points if possible.

I've cleaned the gun many times, and I've tried 4 different magazines, but soft points are still unreliable, and winchester hallow points never feed, ever.

The remington soft points feed 4 out of 5, sometimes all 5, but winchester ammo never feeds.

Any tips guys?

Where in the feed process is it jamming? If it feeds with FMJ, and most times with Rem, and never with Win, then I would tend to think bullet shape has a lot to do with it. Try smoothing the ramp and polishing it. You may never get reliable feeding with the Win, but you may improve that percentage with the Remingtons.

Polish the feed ramp. That is the only thing that might work, It should feed soft points reliably, but hps are always questionable in carbines.

Thanks for the advice. What would be the best way to polish a feeding ramp?

Take some 400 grit emery paper, the black type and smooth the feed ramp which is below the chamber opening until it is nice and shiny and smooth. You won't really be removing metal per se, but smoothing the area that the bullet nose hits first. The idea is to lesses friction. I assume the bullet is jamming in a spot below the chamber, since you did not specify where the jams occur.

or you could use a dremel tool with a buffing pad and metal rouge. brings that ramp out to a mirror like finish without removing any metal per se...

That would be correct. It's just below the opening to the chamber, almost as if the magazine or bolt isn't lifting the bullet high enough, but FMJ's feed without a problem.
