Sounds like an M1 carbine but I could be wrong because I don't know if they were nickel plated.

Vell, Good chance it is a Plainfield (who was purchased by Iver Johnson). The company toyed with nickel plating and even teflon coating the external parts but these finishes were never really accepted by shooters. IJ could have continued the short lived trial. COULD be worth a little more. Heck, I'd hang onto it if for no other reason than a good conversation piece. I don't know if your local library would have books on Plainfield Machine Co or Iver Johnson...check'em out for info.

Try this and see if any of it is familiar with yours.
Universal M1 Carbine Info I have located some infor ads and articles on commercial carbines I've had for about 40 years, I'll go through them and see what I can come up with. Can you put a pic or two here on the forum? One of the companies toyed with a variety of finishes i.e. nickel, teflon, etc but I'm not sure if it was IJ. |

"...Universal was a different manufacturer fom Plainfield or Iver..." Bot Universal and Plainfield Machine Co. were bought out by Iver Johnson. Not the current IJ though. The current IJ has nothing to do with any original IJ firearm. Their site says they may make a carbine down the road though.
The original IJ continued making both Universals and Plainfields until they shut down themselves. They did make a few crass, chromed carbines for some unknown reason. "...assume it was made by..." The 'IJ' would indicate it's an Iver Johnson. |
