just accquired M1 carbine

I just got an M1 carbine when my father passed away last month and don't know much about them. It is an Inland SN 2444xx, has no bayonett lug and is in pretty good shape. Can anyone tell me what I have? Is it safe to shoot and is it worth anything?

My condolences on the loss of your dad.
Value would be in the $500-$600 range sight unseen. Could be even a little higher.
Like Orlando, I'd like to see photos.
Yes, it is safe to shoot. Make sure you check it out first, clean it, and lube it.

Looks like it has been reparked, any markings on the stock? How about some close ups of the side of the flip sight and the front band.

I'm not so sure about a repark, but it could be. Looks pretty much correct, but I would need to see what the insides look like. But at any rate, I'd revise the value upward to at least $900 based on what I can see so far.

Jimb2, dont you think the park looks a little to light gray and fresh? Guess it could be the lighting

Orlando, the color could be the result of the oils being stripped out of the parkerizing by a too enthusiastic cleaning. The greenish tint is the result of oils oxidizing. If the parking was cleaned with a solvent that removed the old oil, it can have that lighter gray color. A lot depends on how much service the carbine has seen. And another point worth noting is the lack of round stake marks on the rear sight dovetail. It appears that there are light type 1 stake marks. Still, I won't say it isn't a repark, just that I'm not certain that it is. It is unusual for the early 6 digit Inlands to be that light, but I do have a 260,xxx Inland that is original finish and it is fairly light colored instead of the smoother dzrk green park.

Looks good. Flip sites, no bayo lug, high wood and a pushbutton safety. I know some one who would give his left one for your M1 carbine. Check very carefully the right side of the stock and see if the crossed cannons are there or if they are on the left side of the stock above the trigger housing.
