m1 carbine mags

i just picked up a GM m1 carbine and have read a few things that say i cannot use 30 round mags in this rifle, without putting in a new magazine catch...I'm sure that i can use 30's in the gun whats the word guys...will it work...

No. The mag catch for the 15 rounders will not support the weight of a full 30 rd mag. (or not for long anyway). You can buy an M2 mag catch for around $10-$15 & changing it out takes about 30 seconds.

The problem with using the 30s in a carbine without the proper mag catch is that the nibs on the mag will tear off. Yes you can use them, but they won't last long. As Delta-3 said, get the m2 catch if you want to use 30s. You can still use the 15s with it, so it is fine unless you want a "correct" WWII carbine.

how do you know if the mag catch has or has not been changed.have recently purchased an m1 that had scope adjustable rear .it came with 4 30 round mags.its an inland div.5 digit serial#

The m2 catch has an arm on it that projects forward to hold the tab on the right side of the mag. The M1 catch doesn't have that arm.

thanks it has an m2 catch . i don't no proper etiquet was i supposed to start a new thread? i am probably spelling etiquet wrong to but am to lazy to bust out the dictionary. thanks again

So y'all are saying my Universal should have fell apart 35+ years ago. Bout all I ever used in it were 30 rounders.
