GM Carbine?

Hey, guys. Looked at a GM Carbine today at the gun shop. Serial #'s match but the stock has a Springfield Armory emblem on it. Can anyone tell me why that is? Asking price for gun is $800. Thanks for any feedback. Ive always wanted an M1 Carbine but I dont want a postwar "commercial" gun.

When you say GM, which company? Inland? Saginaw? Saginaw Grand Rapids? And Springfield Armory....On the left side below the sight? If it is there, then it is a rebuild mark. But if you are looking at an Ordnance stamp on the right side, it could be from any of the makers.

Jim, I don't think he knows who made it. The GM part probably comes from what is found on the barrel. Tell him hw to better ID the maker using a serial number or by trying to look under the rear sight.

When you say Springfield stamp I find that hard to believe. Please drscribe in detail what you are calling a Springfield stamp. The only Springfield stamp that I have ever heard of on a carbine are the rebuild stamp on the left side below the rear sight and the SA marking on the top left of the front of an M2 stock.

Jimb2, the gun is on layaway but I will go tomorrow after work and be able to give you a more detailed description. The best way I can describe it is that on the right side of the stock in the center is a stamp and it was too faded to see the details but it definitely said Springfield Armory. Tomorrow after work I will swing by there and give more details. Thanks.

Sounds like a Garand and not a carbine.

okay, guys! I know its been over a month but I finally got all my sh_t in one sock. Got the gun out of layaway yesterday and shot 50 rds through it before I got it home. Here's the particulars: It's an Inland barrel and reciever, the trigger housing is Saginaw and the stamp on the stock doesnt actually say Springfield Armory but it is a dime sized stamp of the ordnance wheel and crossed cannons. Didnt SA make a number of m2's? With this new info can anyone tell me the signifigance of this stamp? Thank you for any help.

The Springfield stamp you are talking about is technically called the Ordanance Escutcheons Mark. Every M1 Carbine maker had their own mark. So from one maufacturer to another they are a little or a lot different. It doesnt have anything to do with Springfield on a Carbine.

You said the crossed cannon mark is on the right side of your stock.
That makes a difference some times as well. In your case that is where it should be for Inland.
The more important items to note would be the rear sight if it is type 1 2 or 3.

The safety if it is a flip or push button, if push button is it plain or knurled or has any markings.

Does it have a bayo lug?

What kind of front barrel band does it have?

Is there any letters in the sling slot?

Flat or round bolt?

So post pics and Im sure some on here can tell you exactly what you have.
